The Type 56 7.62mm semiautomatic rifle is a Chinese copy of the Soviet SKS. It is the PLA’s first standard issue military rifle used between the late 1950s and the mid-1980s. The weapon offers great improvement in firepower over the obsolete WW-II rifles it replaced. It is reliable and tolerant to the abuse in the battlefield. The rifle used the standard Type 56 7.62 X 39mm rifle cartridge in ten-round clips. The Type 56 rifle is very accurate over long distance engagements, and can be easily built and maintained. Over a million examples were delivered to the PLA as well as many third-world countries. The rifle was used by the North Vietnamese forces during the 1960s/70s Vietnam War, and was last seen action during the 1979 China-Vietnam border conflict. A small number of the rifle remains in service today for training and ceremonial purposes.
