The PL-7 air-to-air missile (PL stands for Pi Li, "Thunderbolt" in Chinese, the generic designation for all PRC air-to-air missiles) is the PRC version of the French Magic R.550 missile. It is a short-range, infra-red guided missile use by Chinese fighters. It was designed by Wu Shendao, and produced at the Factory 331 (Zhuzhou Aeroengine factory) (中国株洲航空发动机厂).

During late 2000 and 2001, Zimbabwean BAE Hawks were reportedly armed with PL-7s for air escort missions against possible Ugandan MiG-21s during the their deployment in support of Laurent Kabila's government.

结构特点
该弹采用十字形双鸭式气动外形布局，鸭式舵面位于导弹重心之前，同装在尾部的大翼展、大面积弹翼相配合，可减少舵面偏转响应时间，提高导弹的机动性，并提供导弹最大平衡攻角，提高近距格斗时的安全性。此外，旋转式尾翼可提高舵面横滚控制效率；固定式前翼可增大舵面效应，减少偏航力矩。
导弹分为前、后2个舱段，以利于维护使用，而不是按导弹各部件分为多个舱段。该弹具有自动搜索截获能力、大机动过载和离轴发射能力、以及高的毁伤目标能力
研制历程
1982年航空工业部所属株洲航空发动机厂开始研制；
1984年研制出首批样弹，同年底在国家靶场进行首批空中发射试验；
1986年底在国家靶场进行鉴定靶试，取得成功；
1987年通过航空工业部技术鉴定委员会审查，获准投入批生产。
