The JianJiao-7 (JJ-7) is the two-seat fighter-trainer version of the Chengdu J-7 (MiG-21 Fishbed) fighter. The aircraft was developed by Guizhou Aviation Industry Group Co (GAIGC) in the early 1980s. Several hundred JJ-7s are believed to be in service with the PLAAF and PLANAF for advanced fighter pilot training. Both Guizhou and Hongdu are developing the next generation advanced trainers as a successor to the JJ-7.

PROGRAMME

Guizhou began to develop the two-seat trainer variant of the J-7 fighter, known as JJ-7, in 1981. The aircraft’s design resembles the Soviet MiG-21U Mongol-A. The first flight of the JJ-7 took place in July 1985, and the design certificate was issued in 1987. The batch production of the JJ-7 began in late 1987, with several hundred examples in several models delivered to the PLAAF/PLANAF as well as foreign customers.

Because the JJ-7 has a similar aerodynamic performance and avionics configuration to the Chinese indigenous fighters such as J-7B, J-7C/D, J-7E/F, J-8A and J-8B, pilots of these fighters could complete most of their proficient development training and mission flight training subjects with the JJ-7 before they are fully qualified for operational flights. However, the JJ-7 lacks the sophisticated avionics and is not very manoeuvrable. Therefore it cannot fulfil the training requirements for the pilots of the latest fourth-generation fighters. The PLAAF is seeking a new generation advanced trainer with better performance and capability.

As well as serving for training purpose, the JJ-7 could also be used for air interception and ground attack roles. The aircraft is armed with a 23mm cannon and two under-wing pylons that can carry short-range IR-guided air-to-air missiles or unguided rocket launch pods.

DESIGN

The JJ-7 is generall based on the J-7B fighter design, with the single-seat cockpit replaced by a tandem two-seat cockpit. The student pilot sits in the front seat and the trainer sits in the rear seat. The original single under-fuselage vertical stabilising fin of the J-7 is replaced by a two-fin design. As a result of the additional seat, the internal fuel tank capacity of the JJ-7 is smaller than that of the J-7B. An additional fuel tank is added on the back of the fuselage between the cockpit canopy and vertical tail. The single rear-hinged cockpit canopy of the J-7 is replaced by two side-hinged (open to right) canopies.

Training equipments include the internal communication system between the trainer and the trainee; a retractable periscope fitted on the rear trainer seat; a fault simulation system which can control the aircraft to simulate various emergent situations; and a flight information recorder for analysis and trial. The aircraft is also fitted with improved air-conditioning.

WEAPONS

The basic variant JJ-7 has a Type 23-3 23mm cannon with 60 rounds.

Three hardpoints are available for various payloads. Centre underfuselage station is pumped to carry a 720 liter drop tank. The two underwing stations could carry two PL-5 IR guided AAMs, unguided rocket pods or free-fall bombs. They can also carry two 480 litre or 720 litre drop tanks.
