The Type 053H2 (Jianghu-III class) is a radical upgraded variant of the Type 053H1, and is generally regarded as the most capable variant of Jianghu class. The Type 053H2 is the first Chinese surface combatant to be armed with the YJ-8 (C-801) anti-ship missiles. It is also the first Chinese surface combatant to be fitted with airtight cabins, central air conditioning, and collective anti-NBC system. The radar systems, powerplant, and command and control all have been improved compared to the previous models of the Type 053H/Jianghu class series frigate.
Type 053H2 is China's first indigenous warship that is close to Western designs
The Type 053H2 missile frigate project was first proposed to the PLA Navy in 1981. The contract to build the first ship was signed between the PLA Navy Equipment Department and China National Shipbuilding Co. (CNSC) in November 1983. Construction of the first of class 535 Huangshi began in April 1984. The ship was launched in October 1985, and entered service with the PLA Navy East Set Fleet in December 1986. The second ship 536 Wuhu was launched in 1987 and commissioned in February 1988. This was followed by another four hulls built for the Royal Thai Navy (Chinese-made hull fitted with U.S. and European weapon and sensor systems). The last ship 537 Zhoushan was delivered to the PLA Navy in 1993.
The Type 052H2/Jianghu-III class is generally regarded as the first Chinese-made surface combatants that shifted away from the 1950s/60s-era Soviet designs. The layout and arrangement of the Type 053H2 frigate have some apparent features from Western, particularly West European designs. The ship has also been incorporated with some relatively advanced Western as well as indigenous technologies.

Before the introduction of the Type 053H2/Jianghu-III class, surface combatants in service with the PLA Navy only had very primitive living conditions for their crew. The combat doctrines of the PLA Navy at the time emphasised merely on the spiritual power and bravery of the crew, while the standard of living condition onboard was regarded as both unnecessary and having negative influence on the morale of the crew.
The Type 053H2 frigate was actually the first Chinese-made surface combatant that gave great priority to the living conditions of the crew. For the 170 sailors and 30 officers onboard, there are 13 sailor cabins, 16 off icier cabins, one canteen, and 4 living-room cabins, all of which are airtight and fitted with central air conditioning and collective anti-NBC system.
In addition, the Type 053H2 was also the first Chinese frigate fitted with a combat data system to integrate various sensors and weapon systems onboard, thus increasing the combat effectiveness of the ship. In addition, electronic warfare and countermeasures (EW/ECM) capabilities are also enhanced.
With the various modifications, the Type 053H2 frigate has a slightly larger displacement than the previous Jinghu class frigate. The ship is capable for coastal patrol and surface strike missions, but lacks long distance self-contain ability. In addition, the frigate still suffers from extremely poor air defence and ASW capabilities as other PLA Navy surface combatants built before the 1990s.
COMMAND, CONTROL, COMMUNICATIONS & INTELLIGENCE (C3I)
The Type 053H2 frigate is fitted with a British-made CTC-1629 combat data system (also known as intelligence centre), or its Chinese copy ZKJ-3A. The system has the most basic command and control functions but is fairly primitive and out of date. Other systems include two indigenous optronic directors (for dual-100 mm main gun targeting), radio communications, and satellite communications (SATCOM).
The ship's surface-to-surface missile system is the indigenous YJ-8 (or in its export designation C-801) sea skimmer anti-ship missile. The missile system has eight box launchers (in four groups, each with 2 launchers). The missile uses active radar homing and is powered by a turbojet engine (with a solid rocket booster). With a max range of 42 km at a speed of 0.9 Mach, the missile is armed with a 165 kg warhead.
The third ship 537 Zhoushan was reported to be fitted with the modified YJ-82 (C-802) anti-ship missile, which has an extended range of 120 km.
The ship's main guns installed on the bow and stern deck are the Type 79A dual-100 mm 56 calibre gun which fires 15 kg rounds at a rate of 18 rounds/min. The range of the gun is more than 22 km against surface targets.
Four Type 76 dual-37 mm 63 calibre manual anti-aircraft guns fire shells at a rate of 400 rounds/min to a range of 9.4 km for airborne targets.
ANTI-SUBMARINE WARFARE (ASW)
The ship has two 5-tubed Type 81 multiple ASW rocket launchers located on the bow deck with 30 rockets. For depth charges (DC), the ship is fitted with four Type 64 DC projectors and two DC racks.
The ship's primary air/surface search radars include a Type 354 Eye Shield 2D air/surface radar operating at I-band, and a Type 517H-1 Knife Rest 2D long-range air search radar operating at A-Band.
The ship has three fire-control radars. One Type 352 Square Tie operating at I-band for surface search and YJ-8 SSM targeting, one Type 343 Wasp Head operating at G/H-band for the dual-100 mm main guns and SSM, and two Type 341 radars for dual-37 mm AAA gun targeting.
Two Racal RM-1290 navigation radars operating at I-band are also fitted.
Type 053H3 frigate upgraded with a new stealthy dual-100 mm main gun
The ship's electronic warfare suite include a RWD-8 Jug Pair intercept, a Type 923-I radar warning receiver, Type 651A IFF, and two Mk-36RBOC 6-barrel chaff/decoy rocket launchers.
舰艇电子战组件包括RWD-8Jug Pair窃听、923-I型雷达告警接收机、651A型IFF和二套Mk-36RBOC 6管箔条/诱骗火箭发射装置。
The ship has a SJD-5 medium-frequency hull-mounted sonar installed for active search and attack, a SJC-1B reconnaissance sonar, and a SJX-4 communications sonar.
The Type 053H2G is powered by two 12E390VA diesels rated at 16,000 hp (17.6 kW). Two shafts drive propellers. The propulsion system provides a maximum speed of 26.5 knots.
